• One Smooth Sumac (Rhus glabra) plant, 1 year old. During dormancy, it is sent without soil with roots wrapped in moist media. After dormancy ends in May, it is potted in soil and sent in a small plastic container. The plant may be pruned to 12-14 inches tall to fit the mailing box.
• Rhus glabra, or Smooth Sumac, is well known for its excellent color in autumn when the long compound leaves turn red and orange. Bright red berry clusters, or drupes, appear in the fall on the female plants. The fruits persist long into winter and many birds and other wildlife rely on them as a food source. Large clusters of yellow flowers appear in early summer on both male and female plants.
• Smooth Sumac is a dioecious species - male & female flowers are produced on separate plants. Since the plants we send have not yet reached maturity, we are unable to determine their sex prior to mailing. For ample production of fruits or seeds, it is recommended that 3 - 5 plants be installed in fairly close proximity to ensure the presence of both sexes. Sumacs are host plants for the Hairstreak Butterfly.

After they break their dormancy in May, they will be trimmed short to promote branching, potted in soil, and sent in small plastic containers.
